Are Heels Safe During Pregnancy?

Doctors claim that it is not advisable wearing high heels in pregnancy. There are however, reasons behind this claim. These include:

  • Your body weight and balance don’t remain the same as the pregnancy progresses.
  • Muscles and ligaments undergo some changes so wearing heels is not a good idea.
  • Heels can cause additional discomfort and pain during pregnancy.
  • Wearing wearing heels during pregnancy poses a lot of threat to your back and baby’s health as heels put excessive pressure on pelvic and back joints.
  • You’ll be at a higher risk for miscarriage because of potential falling incidents.

Having said that, you still may be reluctant to drop the idea of wearing high heels during pregnancy. For that purpose, here are some useful tips below for wearing heels when pregnant:

  • In your first trimester, you can wear pregnancy friendly heels or the low height heels like wedge heels or mules as after this phase, the hormonal flow increases and your muscles stretch out.
  • Invest in stretchable heels rather than the ones which grip your feet tightly to avoid swelling.
  • Invest in heels which are sturdier and long lasting.
  • Avoid narrow and pointy heels like stilettos and kitten heels which make it hard for you to balance your weight. The thinner the heel, the less the support you get for your body.
  • Take breaks in between wearing your heels. Switch to slippers and keep spares wherever necessary.
  • Try foot massagers after a long day of wearing heels while pregnant.
  • One step at a time! Be careful while taking each step and avoid walking quickly. Avoid running in heels at all costs.

When Should I Stop Wearing Heels During Pregnancy?

In the initial period of your pregnancy, it is relatively safe to wear heels. However, you should stop wearing them as your pregnancy progresses. Doctors strictly say no to wearing heels in the third trimester as in that period, you’re prone to experiencing back pain and joint pains because of excessive pressure. Avoid stiletto heels at all costs during that phase.
